Concerning Gun Violence

WHEREAS, occurrences of gun violence continue around the country, particularly mass shootings classified as 4 or more victims shot, not including the shooter, and in which attendees of schools are often the intended targets, has accelerated in recent years; and

WHEREAS, the State of Washington continues to allow certain gun accessories known or suspected to increase the lethality or mortality of a gun attack; and

WHEREAS, the State of Washington has enacted preemption laws that prohibit local municipalities from controlling gun use based on the needs of said local municipalities, beyond state laws; and

WHEREAS, governors from certain states are forming a coalition to identify ways to reduce gun violence and protect citizens, referred to as States for Gun Safety Coalition, which Washington State does not currently participate in.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: The 21st LD Dems requests all elected and appointed legislators to pursue, with haste, gun control legislation to improve gun safety and reduce gun violence, including but not limited to caps on magazine capacity, banning bump stocks, and banning assault-style rifles including but not limited to the AR-15.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT: The 21st LD Dems strongly encourages Washington state Governor Jay Inslee to join the States for Gun Safety Coalition on behalf of Washington State, and bring to the state all learnings from participation in said coalition to be considered for adoption by the State of Washington.
